Staff at Flinders University make a difference each day through their unwavering commitment to students and research at the University. Many staff also make donations to our student and research programs and see first-hand the positive impact and remarkable benefits of their support.
Our Workplace Giving program offers staff the opportunity to make a regular donation to further support students and advance research at the University. Set up via the payroll system, the pre-tax salary sacrifice deduction also has the effect of reducing your taxable income.

To meet the sudden impact of COVID-19 on students, Flinders University has developed a range of financial and non-financial support, including the Matthew Flinders Scholarship.
It has been inspiring to see the way our students and staff have shown resilience, commitment, and compassion to one another throughout a challenging first semester. In Semester 2 we have welcomed students back to campus as more face-to-face teaching recommences in COVID-Safe environments. Lectures which would require much larger groups of students to gather together will be delivered online to keep our students safe from COVID-19. There has been a critical need for all students to have access to technology, though many simply do not have the funds to buy the resources, to succeed with these shifts. And this is on top of the struggle to meet basic living costs in a difficult employment market.
Many of our students support themselves during their studies with part-time and casual work—some doing as many as two or three different jobs to get by. However, these positions have greatly diminished as a result of the pandemic. As a result, thousands of our students are now facing financial hardship and struggling to meet their basic living costs.
Matthew Flinders Scholarship recipient, Sophary Hang is studying a Master of Social Work. Meet our inspiring students and send them a message of support.
Approximately 4,000 of our domestic students are feeling the greatest hardship from the pandemic. These are students who are already experiencing disadvantage from low socio-economic backgrounds, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, those from rural and regional areas, and students with a disability.
It has been estimated that nearly half of our 3,500 international onshore students will need additional financial support at this time. There are no other financial supports available to these students and many face difficulties returning to their home countries due to the travel restrictions currently in place.
The University has made a substantial contribution to creating a COVID-19 Student Support Package, beginning with relief payments of $500 made in April to students with urgent and immediate need. The establishment of the Matthew Flinders Scholarship Fund for students experiencing hardship is another crucial step in supporting vulnerable students.
With so many students in distress, our Flinders community have helped to make this support widely available – with around 1,900 scholarships awarded to students this year. As the repercussions of COVID-19 continue to impact students we are seeking to grow the number of scholarship opportunities available. You can help by giving to the Matthew Flinders Scholarship Fund to ensure we all thrive together.
Your support will help students with their essential basic living needs, such as food and rent, along with the technology to study online. Reducing the financial stress for these students will help relieve their anxiety and enable them to continue to focus on their studies.
For many, this will be an all-important morale boost that means the difference between continuing their studies at Flinders - or ending their educational aspirations altogether. Please don’t let COVID-19 be a barrier to the talented students of today fulfilling their potential for tomorrow.
The Staff Workplace Giving Program provides a new giving pathway for staff to make fortnightly contributions to support students. 100% of your donations will support Flinders University students through the Matthew Flinders Scholarship Fund.
