Simulated Learning Environment (SLE)​

The Simulated Learning Environment (SLE) is a purpose-built clinical training space where students develop both the practical skills and professional identity required to become doctors. Designed to replicate real healthcare settings, the SLE provides a safe and supportive environment in which learners can practise, make decisions, and refine their clinical judgement without risk to patients.

Using a combination of high-fidelity technology and human interaction, the SLE incorporates advanced manikins, standardised patients, and task trainers to support a wide range of learning experiences. High-technology manikins simulate complex physiological responses, while standardised patients enable students to develop communication, clinical reasoning, and patient-centred care skills. Task trainers provide focused, hands-on practice of specific procedures, allowing students to build competence and confidence through repetition.

Students participate in immersive simulations aligned with acute care and the management of the deteriorating patient. These scenarios are designed to mirror real-world clinical challenges, fostering critical thinking, teamwork, communication, and timely intervention.

Central to the SLE is the deliberate establishment and maintenance of psychological safety. Clear expectations are set through structured pre-briefing, emphasising respect, confidentiality, and a shared understanding of when activities are formative learning experiences and when they are formal assessments. Facilitators actively create a culture where mistakes are viewed as opportunities for growth, encouraging open dialogue, reflection, and questioning.

Learning within the SLE begins in Year 1, with foundational skills and structured guidance. Over the following four years, students’ capabilities are progressively scaffolded, increasing in complexity and autonomy as they advance. This staged approach ensures that graduates are not only technically competent but also confident, reflective practitioners prepared for the demands of modern clinical practice.
